The 2009 Mansions Of Gold album gets its first outing on Bandcamp...download and a limited amount of CDs are available, jewel case + 8 page booklet designed by Cormac Figgis. Back in the day it was the second album we had released by the Berlin based label Cannery Row Records, a sort of highlight in our long and winding so-called career.

Recorded on and off throughout late 2007 & 2008. At weekends we would play gigs in places like the Gypsy Hotel at Crane Lane Theatre in Cork, The Cobblestone Dublin, Tramore, Carlow or a one-off at the Paradox in Tilburg, Netherlands.
Then we would record a bit more, burn the candle at both ends and I'd find myself in Germany on a solo escapde in the magical and sadly long gone Cafe Limba in Villingen. Then on to Zeitz, Greiz, Freiburg, Nuremberg or the Ice Cafe in Bondorf. (when you're playing an ice cream parlour on a Saturday night you know you've hit the big time!)
My recently lost and found 2008 diary tells me another weekend I was in the Oranje Kaffe in Arnheim (NL) and The Hopsack in Antwerp (BE) the following night and onwards to Copenhagen. Get home, pay the rent, pay the piper and off for two weeks in Canada (Ontario & Quebec) then take the 14 hour bus ride from Toronto to New York, play two nights there. Then JFK. Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

But we got a good album out of it and if you missed it first time around here's an opportunity to check it out.
Dave Renegade will play a few tracks from it tonight (wed 23 april) on his great Dark Heart of Camden radio show on Hard Rock Radio Hell between 9pm and 12 midnight GMT

AUGUST 2021

Very sad to hear Rory Jones is no longer with us.
He was a DJ, musician and all around nice guy.
We became friends through a shared interest in 1970's Jamaican music, Guinness and the Rolling Stones.
In the 90's his Tuesday night residency in the Pod was the place to be.
We toured together in '98 playing a bunch of dates with The Racketeers in the Netherlands and Denmark.
Rory's guitar playing was an inspiration and his charm and sense of humour kept us all sane under a cloud of madness.
It was a blast. We had such a wild time.
Rest well Rory.

Review from Irish Music Magazine
"Songs from the Fever Ship sees Dowd collaborating with Horslips members Jim Lockhart on keyboards, flute and whistles and drummer and lyricist Eamon Carr. The Horslips influence is evident on a cover of Cu Chullain’s Lament from The Tain and the crisp drumming on Cry On My Grave, which recall vintage Horslips crossed with Dowd’s gothic roots rocking....Highly narrative....  The total work is a rich collection of songs, each aching with life and emotion."

PRESS RELEASE

I am honoured to have been invited by Bordeaux’s prestigious Cite du Vin museum and cultural centre to perform my song The Merchants of Bordeaux in the splendid Thomas Jefferson auditorium: Eamonn Dowd and the Racketters | La Cité du Vin
My song’s lyrics are about the Irish Wild Geese who fled to France in the 17th and 18thcenturies – specifically those who settled in the vineyards of Bordeaux: the “Wine” Geese.Horslips drummer and writer Eamon Carr wrote the lyrics and will read them at my Bordeaux Cite du Vin performance. This will follow an introduction by my friend and journalist John Fleming, who helped curate my new album Songs from the Fever Ship.
The event takes place on Sat Nov 2 at 4pm.
“We were carried/On a crimson tide/Over fields that once were green… We were ragged/We were broken/The most wretched ever seen… So tonight/Let’s salute that call/And let your spirits flow/We’ll raise a glass and call a toast/To the merchants of Bordeaux.”
-          The Merchants of Bordeaux (Eamonn Dowd/Eamon Carr)

NEW ALBUM - SONGS FROM THE FEVER SHIP - COMING IN NOVEMBER
DISLOCATION… DIASPORA… WISTFUL DECAY
EAMONN DOWD’s new album, SONGS FROM THE FEVER SHIP, is a milestone. The Swedish-based Irish cult musician’s collaboration with legendary Horslips drummer and lyricist EAMON CARR has yielded a rich collection of songs on the novelistic scale. Around nearly a dozen striking poetic tales, Dowd weaves epic melodies and musicianship. Storehouses of character and conversational charm, Dowd’s songs are perfect interpretations of Carr’s poetry of dislocation and memory, of his lyrics about the dwindling lifeforce of the diaspora and their aged, wistful decay. Standout tunes include The Merchants of Bordeaux (a seven-minute-plus dark ballad of empathy for the Wild/Wine Geese) and a blistering new version of Horslip’s Cú Chulainn’s Lament (Carr returns to the drums with Jim Lockhart on keyboards, flute and tin whistle to disinter their 1973 Táin classic). Masts, gallows and those who have been wronged populate songs such as Two Black Crows and Oh Hangman. This literary rock album applauds human struggle and survival. Eighteen months in the making, SONGS FROM THE FEVER SHIP is a magical musical collaboration between Eamonn Dowd and Eamon Carr. Poised for release in November 2019, it is available now for pre-purchase on CD, digital download, limited edition vinyl and – in a nod to the coiled past that birthed it – cassette.

John Fleming  (Irish Times Journalist)

Digitally available in November  from I Tunes, Amazon, Apple Music, Bandcamp, CDBaby etc.

Songs from the Fever Ship appears on the Intendance label

Distributed by Pool Musik (Germany)
Claddagh Records (Ireland)

AUGUST 2019
Been busy mixing (and re-mixing) the new album. Should know about a release date soon.
I'm going out on the road for a 17 date tour. The first show is Thursday 29th August in New York at Barchord in Brooklyn.  Jackson Lynch is also on the bill. After that, there are gigs in Sweden, Netherlands, Belgium,  Ireland, Germany and it's likely more dates will be added over time.
Hopefully see you out there.

MARCH 2019
Back in Ireland for a  recording session with a special collection of musicians.  More on this later, and a few photos as well.

DECEMBER 2018
As  the curtain falls on another year, a big Thank You to all who came to a gig anywhere, and to everybody who bought a CD in 2018.
I played  gigs in Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden and my native Ireland and enjoyed most of it.
With xmas upon us, I'm
working on the recordings we started in Arad Studios, Dublin back in June.
As you probably know, I've co-written a few new songs with Eamon Carr (Horslips). Just a couple of weeks ago Bert Deyart came over  from Belgium to Dublin to film us at work. Sheila Sullivan, who played on 'By Hook Or By Crook' (1997) and 'Long Time Gone' (1999) ....both long out of print...plays violin on the record. It should be ready for release later in 2019. And Ken Whelan played some great accordion on those sessions too.
As I write, it's Xmas Eve and I'm trying to mix some of the tracks.
See you out there in 2019

Keep well.

 JULY 2017  -  A MESSAGE FROM EAMONN
Glad to say Dig Into Nowhere has been getting lots of  radio play. Niall Toner on RTE Radio 1, Gavin Glass on Nova 88FM, Karl Tsgdinos on Dublin Bay FM, Mike at WMFO  Boston, and a whole bunch of German stations - Freies Radio Stuttgart, Dom Radio Cologne,  Radio Tide 96FM (Hamburg) , University Radio Berlin and many others.  Thanks for the spins folks.

Recently played  Ireland for the first time in over two years. We had two great gigs in Kilkenny and Dublin with the great Dark Honey opening up on both shows, and Sean A. McDermott added to the bill for the second gig. As a three piece we performed an impromptu acoustic set in The Glimmer Man, Stoneybatter. What we thought would be two or three songs turned into a full-on 12 song set !
(Thanks to Mark Dennehy for that )

Also, I've been kept busy working on the music for 'Excentrique' , a film by Brian Flanagan and John Fleming set in Paris.
And I've been painting a lot too.

If you're wondering what happened to my Tour Diary/Blog, I quit writing that a year ago due to my on going problems with carpal tunnel syndrome.  Basically, the nerve endings in my left arm/wrist are shot which made playing guitar almost impossible for a while. I got fixed up but the less typing I do the better.  Also, these days social media is all me me me, and maybe we need a break from that.
In the meantime there's always Instagram.  Pictures....no words.....
Keep it Real
Eamonn

PS - More gigs coming in the autumn.

A FEW GOOD REVIEWS IN FOR DIG INTO NOWHERE

"...a stellar example of earnest and weathered memories. Looking into the past to transition histories and thoughts into the now. A fitting example is the track “Departure Lounge”. So many vision as questions in no frills perfection."
GLOBAL TEXAN CHRONICLES

"Dowd goes in for a classic folk and country style (as well as a blistering cover of Nikki Sudden’s ‘Death Is Hanging Over Me’), as he casts a measured eye backwards....one of the true survivors of Irish rock."
HOT PRESS

"The spectre of death hangs over Dowd's latest, as the spirited freebooter from The Swinging Swine and The Racketeers digs deeper than his peers to hammer nails in the exile experience."

Eamonn Dowd's Departure Lounge: 'The heart is a suitcase'  (by John Fleming)

Irish-Nordic rocker Eamonn Dowd’s new video Departure Lounge https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LzJqr78X1_U
takes four random corners of the world (Gothenburg, Stockholm, New York and West Africa’s Burkina Faso) and ties them into a parcel of existential dislocation. Look at these L trains and half-empty glasses: you don’t have to be on the road to feel lost.

Airports, train stations and passing scenery haunt Dowd’s monochrome video. An amalgam of travel and navigation, of memory and maps, of wrong turns at crossroads, it’s a tour of urban Scandinavian bridges, of Fifth Avenue and eternal transit points. Roads girdle the globe. Across all this, a rugged and ashen Dowd strides across European no man’s lands, cities, bars and streets. Against stark, bony trees on a Gothenburg hill, he walks as an earthed alien. 'Someone at a recent gig in Oslo told me it looks like an out-take from one of Aki Kaurismaki’s films', he says, referencing the cult Finnish director (Leningrad Cowboys, I Hired A Contract Killer). The song draws extra ethereal dimensionality from the backing vocals of Jenny Menso (formerly of hit Swedish group Four Flavours).

With a nod to fellow Flemish film-maker Anton Corbijn (remember the Joy Division film Control?), video director Bert Deyeart uses a binary palette of black and white linked by industrial greys to convey the heart and mind of a travelled troubadour. 'Eamonn Dowd’s heart is a suitcase. What could be inside' laughs Deyeart. 'I tried to explore that with the video.'

Dowd’s compass is global: 'Won’t you take me back / Take me back home? / I would go if I knew which way to go… / Should I go north or south / Should I go east or west? / Take me back.'

The whole song is driven by drumming and studio veteran Al Cowan, a Dubliner who learnt the drums with a travelling circus. Defecting after work with Rocky DeValera, punk legends Paranoid Visions and Kate Bush, he is a long-time Dowd collaborator; the men’s musical blood pact is evident here.

Departure Lounge is the lead single from Eamonn Dowd's new album Dig into Nowhere, out now on Disques Fridge and Spellbound Records. Look for the album in selected record stores in Ireland and Germany  and on the world wide web.

SEPTEMBER 2015
Mid September gig with the Last Souls at short notice in Kom Musik Bar, Göteborg on Friday 18th. Doors open 6.30pm - showtime is 8.30pm or 9pm approx. First gig back after Andy's accident. New material, new boots and gadgets.

Slick Andy has been out of action for a few weeks due to a 5 a.m. skateboarding accident that resulted in a cracked elbow. But during downtime he co-wrote a song and his latent skills as a piano player and string arranger surprised us all. He also started to write for UK magazine Azaria. His latest piece in the Eyeball Chronicles is here in the online version of the mag - Azaria.

I've been asked by Calle Falksten to join him on his show on Radio 88 Partille at 9pm CET - 8pm GMT Thursday 10th September. Calle has long been fascinated with Australian bands of the 1980's,  so we will play and discuss records by The Go-Betweens, The Triffids, The Birthday Party, G.W. McLennan and others. Tune in on 88FM or live streaming HERE.

Calle's show will be followed by my regular 2 hour long Rock 'n' Roots Show.

OCTOBER  2014
New album - "Down A Hundred Crooked Roads" is out now. You can listen to a sample of the whole album here on Soundcloud.
Hop over to the CD page to buy downloads or order a CD by mail order. CD's will be available at all gigs as is the fashion these days.
The bulk of it was recorded with The Last Souls. We used Ljudvalvet Studio, Göteborg.  A cool place in Majorna packed with vintage amps, mics, tape recorders and drum kits. Sessions were engineered by Thomas Frank, assisted by Andra Teodorescu. We did the overdubs at Lucifer Rising. I recorded the track with Ingrid Veerman (AKA Inneke 23) in Belgium last December in the middle of a tour. We recorded with Peter Van De Veire at Yellow Tape Studios in Gent. That's the only slow song on this slice of plastic. The rest is a full-on sonic assault of guitars. With The Racketeers we recorded in Dublin at Sonic Recording Studios where Al Cowan was in command and Arad Studios where Les Keye made it sound real good.

The single version has been mastered by David Rogers at Buddha Sound Mastering in London and sounds even better.

NOVEMBER 2013
Last year I had the pleasure of spending a few hours with Lady Olivia Robertson at her home in Clonegal Castle. I had the notion of recording an instrumental piece and the idea was that Lady Olivia, High Priestess of Isis,  would do a spoken word piece on the track. She was hip enough to give the project the thumbs up. We recorded in her study and also in the subterranean temple. The resulting track was released earlier this year on the limited edition CD "Wicked Wind Coming."
Here's a youtube link to the track. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLhtj-Y9xvk
Olivia passed into spirit on November 14. She truly was a remarkable lady.

"Wicked Wind Coming" is available at all the July gigs as well as mail order from this site and downloads from I Tunes, Amazon etc. No, its not on Spotify and wont be. More scribbling on the blog. See the link above.

AUGUST 2013

There's a new Racketeers CD on the way . "Wicked Wind Coming" is a 7 track limited edition release featuring Wicked Wind / You Know The Price / Time Is All We Have / Black Isis / Everything Is Free / Anything You Want / The Trip To Clonegal / Lady Olivia.
You may know 'Wicked Wind' and 'You Know The Price' (of everything) from recent gigs. And we've been playing Gillian Welch's 'Everything Is Free' for a few years now. It was time to get these tracks onto plastic. 'Time Is all We Have' was available before but only as a very very limited edition lathe-cut 7 inch single. I think there was only about 20 copies cut. 'Anything You Want' is brand new while 'The Trip To Clonelgal'  is a rambling instrumental that segues into 'Lady Olivia', a spoken word piece by Lady Olivia Roberstson that I recorded in Huntington Castle, Clonegal last October. Olivia is High Priestess Of The Fellowship Of Isis. At 96, she still travels the world and has more energy than many people a quarter of her age. In keeping with the general vibe, we've re-cycled 'Black Isis' from 1996. This song first saw the light of day on the long out of print 'By Hook Or By Crook' album, and it's never been available for download until now.  AVAILABLE SUNDAY JUNE 23 2013

LIMITED EDITION CD in 6 page full colour fold-out sleeve. First 33 copies come with additional grey card hand-stamped, wax-sealed cover.

Olaf Tyaransen at Hot Press reviewed "Things Aren't The Way They Used To Be."  Here's an extract.

" No stranger to the highways and by ways of Europe, Canada and the US, Dubliner Eamonn Dowd is one of the great survivors of
Irish rock ‘n’ roll – so old-school that he released an album on cassette just a few years back...... Featuring 12 tracks, this rough and ready country/garage collection is so raw you can practically smell the stale fags and booze. Against a basic backing of guitar, bass, drums and the occasional harmonica, Dowd growls his songs of wandering, revenge, obsession, regret and the occasional party...... On ‘When I First Came To Town’, he sounds like early period Nick Cave......His memorable version of Eddie Noack’s country murder ballad ‘Psycho’ sticks in the mind like blood on a barroom floor......... this wonderfully raw album won’t let you forget the way they once were – and will definitely appeal to rockers of a certain vintage. "

OLAF TYARANSEN - HOT PRESS
MAY 2013

Keith Hargreaves at Americana UK gave "Things Aren't The Way They Used To Be" a good review. Here's an extract.

"An album brimful of intent and spirit that starts out snarling and finishes with a defiant spit, and in between a series of 10 self penned songs about revenge, murder and obsession as well a couple of judicious covers ‘Tell Old Bill’ a folk classic and ‘Psycho’ the Eddie Noack classic.
So what’s it like? Well...... It is everything you would expect from a man who fronted a wild and hard rocking touring band for over 15 years. It is raw and full of guitars, spite and spittle..................This man must be immense live and after listening to this any one would know that a night with Eamonn Dowd on stage would be a full on experience. Plus, anyone who can write a chorus that goes “she went out galavanting, she went out galavanting” gets my vote every time".

A review of the Weiher-Rock Festival in Friedelsheim, Germany. Journalist  Hans Kraus claims I was the highlight. (I didn't pay him

'They Didn't Like My Songs When I played That Rock 'n' Roll' CD  comes with a novelty limited edition transparent 7 inch hand-cut lathe single.  The single was cut by Peter King in Christchurch, New Zealand from the same polycarbonate roofing plastic that he has used to cut records for Sonic Youth  and The Beastie Boys. FEBRUARY 2011

Tell Old Bill is the new single released on vinyl / CD / download. The record is a strictly limited edition black lathe cut by Dion and Megamike at  Perthectionist in Australia. These records are not pressed, each one is cut in  real time! Every 7inch comes with a free CD (CD’s are not sold separately )and  it's available as a download for 99 cents. The song is a re-working of the  old American folk song, covered by many but Dave Van Ronk’s version is a  particular favourite. I learnt it from the playing of Jackson Lynch who is part  of the new folk revival currently happening in New York, so it seemed fitting  that Jack should play on the record. The B side is a new song of mine called ‘Come On And Get It.’  SOLD OUT
